Licensing

Which licence you need, what it covers, and what it never covers.

Illustar illustrations are licensed, not sold. A purchase grants a non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide right to use the illustration under the licence you select. Copyright stays with Mirko Grisendi.

Which licence do you need?

Every illustration is offered under two licences, and one question separates them.

Will the image be physically printed more than 5,000 times, or appear on something you sell?

If yes, you need Extended. If no, Standard covers you. Everything else is the same on both.

  Standard Extended
Core illustrations €39 €117
Selected illustrations €75 €225

Extended is always three times the Standard price, on every illustration. The price you see on a product page is the price you pay: there are no usage tiers to calculate and no rights to negotiate afterwards.

Standard covers

  • Websites, landing pages, blogs, apps, social media and newsletters, with unlimited digital views.
  • Advertising, promotional campaigns and commercial communications.
  • Books, magazines, newspapers, reports, presentations and corporate communications.
  • Physical printing and packaging, up to 5,000 reproductions in total.
  • Cropping, resizing, recolouring and adding text.

Extended adds

  • Unlimited physical reproductions.
  • Merchandise and products offered for sale, within the limits below.
  • Templates and digital products, but only where the illustration cannot be extracted as a separate file.

Three things worth knowing before you buy

These are the clauses that most often surprise people later, so they are here rather than further down.

1. One licence covers one end client

If you work for clients, each licence is tied to a single end client. The association becomes final the first time the illustration is used, published, printed or delivered for that client. You can then use it in as many projects as you like for that same client. A different client needs a new licence. If you are using the illustration for your own business, you are the end client.

No end-client name is requested at checkout or shown on the licence certificate. You are asked to keep your own record of it, in case a compliance check is ever needed.

2. The original file stays with you

You may deliver the finished, flattened project to your client. You may not pass on the standalone high-resolution JPG — not to the client, not to collaborators, not into a shared asset library or repository. Printers and technical suppliers receive only what is strictly necessary to produce the job, and acquire no rights of their own.

3. Two uses need a separate agreement

Print-on-demand is not covered by either licence. Neither is using an illustration as a logo, an exclusive identifying element or a registered trademark. Both are possible, but only under a separate written agreement — write before you design, not after.

What no licence permits

Two prohibitions apply to every licence sold here, and they are part of what you are buying.

No AI training. The illustrations, their previews and their metadata may not be used to train, test, evaluate or improve artificial intelligence models, nor for scraping, text and data mining, dataset creation or synthetic generation. Every licensee accepts this restriction.

No redistribution of the file. The standalone file may not be resold, shared, sublicensed or uploaded to stock services, download platforms or asset collections. NFTs, tokenisation and blockchain products are also excluded.

Illegal, defamatory and misleading uses are prohibited, as are uses that infringe third-party rights. A full list of prohibited and conditionally permitted subjects — including alcohol, gambling, medical claims and political campaigning — is set out in the Licence Agreement.

How the 5,000 limit is counted

The limit applies in total across editorial print, signage, posters, brochures, flyers, packaging and physical promotional materials not offered for sale. Views on websites, social media and newsletters are never counted.

Merchandise under the Extended Licence

An Extended Licence allows the illustration to be incorporated into merchandise and products offered for sale, provided the image is not distributed as a standalone file, is not produced through print-on-demand services, and is not the primary value of the product. If the illustration is the essential reason someone buys the product, a separate agreement is required.

Original work and third-party rights

Illustar illustrations are original works. They do not depict identifiable real people and do not incorporate third-party trademarks, characters or artworks, unless the product page states otherwise. The catalogue therefore carries no editorial-only restriction. If a future illustration ever does, it will say so on its own product page.

Custom licences

For exclusivity, logo or trademark use, print-on-demand, products whose primary value is the illustration, or any use not covered above, write to support@illustar.art before use.

This page is a plain-language summary written to be read. It is not the contract. Where the two differ, the Licence Agreement prevails.
